There’s no turning back now! – We bought a bus!
We bought a bus!
I met the mechanic this morning and he did a DOT inspection. He said:
- the motor looked good and dry (no leaks)
- no fluid on the undercarriage
- new brakes all around
- new tires on front
- air brakes fully functional
He had no issues with the road worthiness. He did however find:
- the fuel gauge doesn’t work
- it will need rear tires soon
The bottom line is I felt it was a good deal even at the asking price of $3000 based on the other buses available in the area. The funny thing is that I’ve called around and checked on other buses, but this is the first bus we saw and it’s the bus which made us consider that doing a conversion was actually a viable option. So after the inspection I approached the owner and negotiated a price. I offered $2500 and he accepted, which immediately made me think I should have offered less. But between the condition of the bus and the other available options I think I got a good deal. You certainly can’t build a standard foundation, walls, roof and windows for $2500, even in a tiny house.
We are so excited. We can’t believe it’s actually happening but here it is. I know a lot of my family is going to think we’re crazy, but I truly believe this is the opportunity we need to get a leg up and secure our future. If can look at the buses we admire and wish to model our bus after and can still call me crazy for wanting to live in a bus, then I guess there’s just no way we’re going to ever see eye to eye.
Check out my previous post for links to the skoolies we admire most.
Once again I’d like to give a shout out to James Mitchell with Rolling Auto Tech. Without James I’m not sure I’d have felt comfortable buying the bus, and he was so thorough that I’m going to have him work on my wife’s Isuzu Trooper and probably anything else we need going forward. If you’re in the East Tennessee area and need a good mechanic who will come to you, I’d highly recommend you give him a call.
I’d also like to give a shout out to Miles Drawhorn with Rovers Place Embroidery. If you need any embroidery work I’d definitely suggest you give him a call.
